The History of Pine Brothers

1870, J. Herman Pine opened a confectionery shop. Afflicted with an interminable sore throat, he swabbed his throat with glycerin several times a day. Frustrated with the temporary solution of swabbing, he decided to create a concoction that would provide longer-lasting soothing effects. He combined the natural qualities of glycerin with the healing properties of gum acacia, and then added natural flavoring and a sweetener to create Pine Brothers Softish Throat Drops.

Pine Brothers was born in a confectionary store on 8th Street in Philadelphia in 1870. By 1930, they reached mass-market popularity and were acquired by the LifeSavers company. It was later dropped by the company in the 1970s and then, rudderless and under-appreciated, was completely out of production by 1999. Victoria Knight-McDowell, the school teacher who founded Airborne, fell in love with the story and revived the brand which is going back into wide release by Christmas 2011.
