Fun with Kids: Make Your Own Recycled Rainbow Crayons

If you’re like us, you probably have a ton of old & new crayons laying around! Since our little ones only seem to gravitate towards the new, fresh and sharp crayons, we have a large bucket filled with the ones that are not deemed ‘usable’ anymore! This is also a great way to use up all of the crayons you receive from restaurants. So, we took a rainy day afternoon to make our own recycled rainbow crayons!

To Do This Activity, You Will Need the Following:

Crayons (and more crayons!) – wrappers removed

Muffin Tin(s)

Cupcake Liners

IMG_4321 (1)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to the lowest temperature setting. This varies by oven, ours is at 220 degrees F.
  2. Put cupcake liners into the muffin tin(s).
  3. Remove the wrappers from the crayons. ***You may need to help your child do this part, as my 5 year old had trouble getting her fingernail under the wrapper to pull it off.
  4. Break the crayons into small pieces and fill the cupcake liners with the broken crayon pieces. The more colors you use, the more you will have a rainbow effect when done!
  5. Place the muffin tin in the oven and bake the crayons for 20-30 minutes, or until the wax has melted. Our crayons took longer than 30 minutes, so it will vary by oven.
  6. Remove the muffin tin; let cool.
  7. Once cool, remove the cupcake liners from the crayons.
  8. Use the crayons to color and create!

We live in FL, and the local farmer’s markets open starting in October and run through May…to beat the extreme FL heat! We live right around the corner from one of the larger farmer’s markets in the area, complete with live music, tasty snacks, and craft boutiques. It’s a ton of fun!

This year, I will be incredibly prepared to hit the market with ease with the new meori® Shopper Bundle. This handy, portable Classic Medium Box is simply perfect for light shopping and smaller spaces, and stores neatly in my trunk or or pantry. It comes with an adjustable Carrying Handle so you can take it from your vehicle to the market or store and back again…no need to unpack your groceries!

The meori® Shopper Bundle is made of high-grade, tear-proof, dirt-resistant polyester, and folds and unfolds in three easy steps. It wipes clean with a damp sponge, too! With one compartment that features two mesh pockets, the meori® Shopper Bundle can hold up to 65 lbs.

While the Classic Medium Box is made for organization while shopping, my little ones decided it was made for carrying around their treasured stuffed animals! Hey – if it gets them to clean up and organize, I am all for it!

Before our youngest daughter headed off to kindergarten three weeks ago, a fun package containing the Early Explorers Subscription from Little Passports arrived in the mail! She was so excited to open the suitcase, unpack it, and try her hand at all the fun activities packed inside!

LittlePassportsEE-WORLD.8-15

Little Passports merges play with geography, science, and reading to make learning fun -anytime of the year! Each month, kids receive a package from their Little Passports pen pals centered on a theme, state, or country. The packages include games, souvenirs, postcards, and more.

Little Passports intro kit

In the Early Explorers Subscription, our daughter followed pen pals Max and Mia as they learned about global themes. Everything she needed to get started on their adventure was included in a bright orange suitcase, such as a wall-sized world map, 20-page activity booklet, luggage tag, stickers and photos.

Little Passports oceans kit

With an exciting new theme each month, kids ages 3-5 years old can add stickers to their passports, collect famous landmarks like the Sphinx of ancient Egypt, and play a fishing game to learn more about what lives under the sea. Of course, our little guy wanted to get in on the action of the fishing game!

Little Passports Stickers

Additionally, Little Passports offers free digital Teacher Guides to coincide with countries featured in the World Edition. These guides make it easy and seamless for teachers or parents to integrate a World Edition subscription into their curriculum or at home with their kids. Countries featured in the Teacher Guides include Brazil, Japan, France, Egypt, Australia, and more.

We have had so much fun with the Early Explorers Subscription from Little Passports since it arrived! We are now big fans of Little Passports and our daughter keeps asking when the next month’s theme will arrive!
