It’s almost that time of year again! Like always, Thanksgiving sneaks up on us so quickly. Before we know it, summer is over, and we’re putting up our fall décor and shopping for our big turkey dinner! If you’re hosting a party this Thanksgiving, and you are environmentally conscious, here are some creative ways you can keep it green, yet still enjoyable.
How to Have a Green Thanksgiving Party
Create a list: First of all, think of how many people you’re having. Then, write out a list of all the supplies you think you’ll need. This helps you avoid not only wasting your time, but gas as well!
Menu: Think about what you’ll be serving. If you want to be green conscious, you may want to think the vegetarian or vegan route. Another good idea is to consider using fruits and vegetables from your garden or local farmer’s market.
Candle lit: How about you try something a little different. Instead of using lights and the electricity, try having a nice candle lit dinner. This is more intimate, calm, and also a green way for lighting!
Silverware: When we think of food and big dinners a lot of people tend to think using plastic and throw away silverware. This can be much easier to clean up, but all the waste you will have at the end of the day can really hurt the environment. This Thanksgiving, make sure you bring out all your dishes and utensils. You may have a mess to clean up, and a lot of dishes to do, but at least you can save a few garbage bags worth of waste.
Leftovers: Instead of throwing away all your left over food, be sure to send people home with leftovers for the next few days. Between this, and creating a compost pile, you will have much less garbage at the end of the week.
Taking the time to have a green holiday can and will help our environment. One person at a time can make a change. Whether it’s one less garbage bag, using less electricity or even a different menu this holiday, we can make a change! Be creative and continue to think of ways to save our planet each day!
