Back-to-School Tips from a Mom of a Freshman, Fifth Grader, and Kindergartener

The back-to-school season looks a little different in our house these days. This year, I have a high school freshman, a fifth grader, and a kindergartener, which means we’re juggling three completely different schedules, routines, and school needs.

Over the years, I’ve learned that a successful start to the school year isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating simple systems that help your family stay organized, reduce stress, and make mornings run a little smoother. Whether you’re sending your child off to kindergarten for the very first time or navigating high school sports, homework, and activities, these back-to-school tips can help your family start the year off right.

1. Prepare Everything the Night Before

If there’s one thing that has saved my sanity year after year, it’s preparing as much as possible the night before.

Before bed, we:

  • Lay out clothes
  • Pack lunches
  • Pick out snacks for snack time
  • Fill water bottles and place them in the refrigerator overnight
  • Charge devices if needed
  • Double-check backpacks and school papers

A few minutes of preparation at night can make a huge difference in how the next morning feels. Instead of rushing around looking for missing shoes or scrambling to pack lunches, we’re able to start the day feeling a little more prepared.

This quick routine helps prevent forgotten forms, missed deadlines, and last-minute surprises the next morning.

Between playground equipment, lunch tables, classroom supplies, and after-school activities, clean hands aren’t always easy to come by.

When everyone can see what’s happening throughout the week and month, there’s a lot less confusion and a lot more teamwork.

6. Remember That Every Child Has Different Needs

One thing I’ve learned from having a freshman, a fifth grader, and a kindergartener is that every stage comes with unique challenges.

My high schooler is learning greater independence and time management. My fifth grader is balancing increased academic responsibilities while still needing reminders. My kindergartener is learning brand-new routines and building confidence every day.

What works for one child may not work for another, and that’s okay. The goal isn’t having a perfect system. It’s creating routines that support each child where they are.

Game On Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Made with melted cheese and fresh baby spinach, this Grilled Cheese Sandwich recipe is made with St. Pierre Bakery’s light and buttery Sliced Brioche Loaf for the perfect kid-friendly game day fare!

We have been making grilled cheese sandwiches for our littles with baby spinach tucked inside for extra nutrition for years, and they are used to seeing a little green inside the sandwiches.

Game On Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Ingredients

2 slices St. Pierre Sliced Brioche Loaf

2 cups cheese, grated (preferably organic)

1 large handfuls of baby spinach (preferably organic)

1 tbsp. butter

1 tbsp. vegetable oil

Preparation

On top of one slice of St Pierre’s Sliced Brioche Loaf, add 1 large handful of grated cheese to one slice of brioche.

Add a few baby spinach leaves, topped with another large handful grated cheese.

Finish with another slice of Brioche Loaf.

Melt a knob of butter to a pan over a low heat, then add a splash of oil so the butter doesn’t burn.

When the pan is hot, add your sandwich to the pan and cook for 2 minutes on each side.
