Teach Your Children How to Have Healthy Teeth & Gums for Life

Practice makes perfect, especially when it comes to having healthy teeth and gums for life. And there’s no time like the present to practice perfect tooth brushing and oral care, because February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. Parents often wonder how to motivate kids to care about and take charge of the condition of their teeth. Nagging does not work. Not nagging does not work. What does?

• Parents, America’s Next Top Super “Models”: Telling, easily confused with nagging, is one thing. Showing is quite another. Kids love to imitate adults, and if you show them you are committed to brushing your teeth thoroughly, every morning and at bedtime, they will follow suit. Modeling begets model behavior.

Don’t “make it work!” Make it fun instead. One way to do that is to provide a fun and colorful toothbrush that distracts from the boredom associated with the task of brushing. Let your child choose a new toothbrush every three months (when the bristles get worn out), a ritual she’ll look forward to. Try the FireFly Family of Toothbrushes with their innovative, light up timer technology, to ensure your child brushes for a full minute on each arch.

• Breakfast really is the most important meal. And not just for the obvious reasons of fueling the brain and body for rigorous and vigorous activity throughout the day. A healthy, filling breakfast will cut down cravings for sweet, sugary pick-me-ups during school, when it is harder for your child to brush off the cavity causing residue.

Floss for success: Early to bed, early to rise, early to floss = healthy and wise! Familiarity breeds comfort, and flossing is another one of those oral care habits that’s best learned early on. Flavored and colored flosses, or floss “picks” that are easy to maneuver are good ways for kids to start.

Baby teeth count: Don’t forget the youngest member of the family. Dentists say that parents should begin brushing baby’s teeth the moment the first tooth erupts. It’s never too early to get her used to a good habit. And there’s even a right-sized Baby Firefly toothbrush to delight and distract her with its colorful blinking timer.
