The back-to-school season looks a little different in our house these days. This year, I have a high school freshman, a fifth grader, and a kindergartener, which means we’re juggling three completely different schedules, routines, and school needs.
Over the years, I’ve learned that a successful start to the school year isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating simple systems that help your family stay organized, reduce stress, and make mornings run a little smoother. Whether you’re sending your child off to kindergarten for the very first time or navigating high school sports, homework, and activities, these back-to-school tips can help your family start the year off right.
1. Prepare Everything the Night Before
If there’s one thing that has saved my sanity year after year, it’s preparing as much as possible the night before.
Before bed, we:
- Lay out clothes
- Pack lunches
- Pick out snacks for snack time
- Fill water bottles and place them in the refrigerator overnight
- Charge devices if needed
- Double-check backpacks and school papers
A few minutes of preparation at night can make a huge difference in how the next morning feels. Instead of rushing around looking for missing shoes or scrambling to pack lunches, we’re able to start the day feeling a little more prepared.
2. Invest in Quality Back-to-School Essentials
As a mom of kids ranging from kindergarten through high school, I’ve learned that some school supplies are absolutely worth investing in.
North Face Backpacks
We’ve had great experiences with North Face backpacks over the years. My freshman carries much more than she did in elementary school, and having a durable backpack that can handle textbooks, folders, sports gear, and daily wear is worth every penny. They consistently hold up throughout the school year and beyond.
OMIE Lunch Boxes
When it comes to packing lunches, we’ve been longtime fans of OMIE Lunch Boxes. I love that they help keep food organized while allowing me to pack a variety of options. My fifth grader especially enjoys having both warm and cold foods packed together, making lunchtime a little more exciting.
Chicco No Spill Straw Cups
For younger children, independence is everything! My kindergartener loves his Chicco No Spill Straw Cup, and I love that it helps prevent leaks and spills inside his backpack. It’s easy for little hands to use and gives me one less thing to worry about during the school day.
Gatorade Stainless Steel Water Bottle
One item that all three of my kids can agree on is the Gatorade Stainless Steel Water Bottle. It keeps drinks cold for hours, survives being tossed into backpacks, and helps encourage everyone to stay hydrated throughout the day.

3. Check Backpacks Every Evening
One of the simplest habits that keeps our school year running smoothly is doing a daily backpack check.
Every evening, we:
- Empty every pocket
- Remove snack wrappers and random treasures
- Look for notes from teachers
- Sign permission slips
- Check homework assignments
- Restock supplies if needed
This quick routine helps prevent forgotten forms, missed deadlines, and last-minute surprises the next morning.
4. Be Prepared for Messes
Let’s be honest. Kids touch everything!
Between playground equipment, lunch tables, classroom supplies, and after-school activities, clean hands aren’t always easy to come by.
One item I always keep tucked into my kids’ backpacks is Handzies Soap + Water Wipes. Unlike traditional wipes, they actually contain soap and water, making them a great option when a sink isn’t available.
They’re perfect for:
- Before lunch
- After recess
- During field trips
- After sports practices
- Anytime messy hands happen
- =
I also keep extra packs in the car because they always seem to come in handy.
5. Create a Family Command Center
I’ve always relied heavily on my phone calendar to keep our family’s schedule organized, but with three kids in three different stages of life, I’ve realized we need something more visible. This year, we’re adding a large family calendar that everyone can see!
The best place for a family command center is somewhere central, like:
- The kitchen
- A mudroom
- Near the main entryway
Think function and organization first.
Use it to track:
- School events
- Sports schedules
- Appointments
- Family activities
- Project deadlines
- Early release days
- Teacher conferences
When everyone can see what’s happening throughout the week and month, there’s a lot less confusion and a lot more teamwork.
6. Remember That Every Child Has Different Needs
One thing I’ve learned from having a freshman, a fifth grader, and a kindergartener is that every stage comes with unique challenges.
My high schooler is learning greater independence and time management. My fifth grader is balancing increased academic responsibilities while still needing reminders. My kindergartener is learning brand-new routines and building confidence every day.
What works for one child may not work for another, and that’s okay. The goal isn’t having a perfect system. It’s creating routines that support each child where they are.
